From Movie Theater to Wedding Destination: Inside Honey Hill’s Remarkable Second Act

A former community cinema near Cleveland is becoming a place for a different kind of storytelling—and its imaginative approach to gathering caught our attention.

Before there were wedding vows, there were movie nights. Before first dances, there were opening credits. For years, a community cinema in Northeast Ohio brought people together to watch stories unfold. Today, that same property is inviting them to celebrate their own.

Welcome to The Hive, a former community movie theater called Chagrin Cinemas that has been entirely reimagined as a gathering destination and home to Honey Hill—a wedding and event venue giving this local landmark a remarkable second act.

At Wed Society, we’re always looking for places and people bringing a fresh perspective to weddings. Honey Hill stood out for the ambition behind its transformation: a familiar local landmark reimagined as a collection of gathering spaces, with weddings woven into a larger vision for community connection. It’s a Cleveland-area story with inspiration that reaches well beyond Northeast Ohio.

An Unexpected Setting. A Bigger Vision.

For husband-and-wife owners Kimberly and Jimmy Gibson, the former theater offered an opportunity to give a meaningful place a new purpose.

With longstanding ties to the Cleveland area, the Gibsons recognized what the building had already meant to its community. They envisioned a destination that could carry that spirit forward, welcoming people back for new reasons while preserving the sense of connection that made the property special.

Their guiding idea: “Holding Space For Life’s Moments.”

That philosophy took shape as The Hive, a sprawling gathering destination spanning more than 60,000 square feet, where dining, entertainment, and celebrations come together under one roof. At its heart is Honey Hill, the dedicated wedding and event venue designed to hold some of life’s sweetest moments.

The concept gives the property a particularly compelling second act. A building that once brought people together through film now welcomes them to gather around the table, celebrate milestones, and create traditions of their own.

A Wedding Day With Room for Every Chapter

Step inside Honey Hill, and the transformation comes into focus. Towering timber beams frame the main event space, where the sparkle of a crystal chandelier complements the warmth of the wood. Natural light softens the grand setting, creating an atmosphere that feels elegant and welcoming.

Above it all, a Romeo and Juliet balcony holds a particularly charming piece of the building’s past: it was once the cinema’s projection runway. Today, that same perch can become the setting for a toast or a private meal. It’s an unexpected connection between the stories once shown here and the ones now being celebrated.

The character continues in the spaces surrounding the celebration. In the Honeysuckle Suite, vintage-inspired wallpaper, mirrors, comfortable lounge seating, and a custom coffee bar set the scene for a wedding morning spent with your closest people. Six vanity stations make room for hair, makeup and conversation, while natural light welcomes those first getting-ready photographs.

Outside, landscaped gardens and strands of lights give The Courtyard an inviting atmosphere for cocktails, engagement parties, or newlywed toasts. Even the ground tells a local story: its stamped concrete was designed to recall the original brick roads of downtown Chagrin Falls.

For couples who want to give their guests an experience as memorable as the wedding itself, the possibilities extend well beyond Honey Hill’s reception space. Within The Hive, a preserved movie theater with plush seating and a big screen, The Woodshed concert venue, Timberfire’s glass-enclosed private dining room, and The Broom Closet speakeasy open up an imaginative way to celebrate.  Alongside Honey Hill’s ceremony and reception settings, these unexpected spaces invite couples to create a series of memorable moments that reflect their personalities and give guests something to discover at every turn.

Personal Hospitality at the Heart of It

The scale of the transformation hasn’t changed the Gibsons’ approach to caring for people.

As the Honey Hill team puts it, they remain “mom and pop at our core.” That means treating client interactions with the warmth and attention they would extend to family, building relationships with couples throughout the planning process.

That personal philosophy is central to the story. Behind the unexpected setting and ambitious concept are owners whose connection to the community helped inspire the destination in the first place.

Why Honey Hill Caught Our Attention

A former cinema is an intriguing beginning for a wedding venue. What makes Honey Hill worthy of a closer look is how that beginning informs the larger idea: giving a place built for gathering a new way to bring people together.

For couples searching for a venue with a story and endless experiential elements, it offers an especially memorable starting point. For the wedding industry, it offers inspiration in the possibilities of existing spaces—and in what can happen when local history, imagination, and hospitality come together.

Part of the Wed Society Cleveland + Northeast Ohio wedding community, Honey Hill is bringing that vision to life, one celebration at a time.

Once, people came here to watch a love story. Now, they can come to celebrate their own. This unique venue concept is a reminder that some of the most meaningful spaces aren’t built from the ground up, but created by giving places with history a second act.
